As we left Rissani behind we drove through a vast flat desert of pebbles. In the distance we could see mountains in one directions and sand dunes in another, but with classic desert mirages making it look like there were lakes between us and them. Our hotel at Merzouga was right at the junction of the pebble desert and the sand dunes. Out the back was an encampment of Berber and camels, obviously for the tourists. We took a camel ride into the dunes to watch the sun set from the top of one of the highest. Though we were only a mile or so from the hotel we seemed to be in the middle of nowhere. Camels take a bit of getting use to, but the overall experience was not to be missed.
